Chopin’s Warsaw and Masovia
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Let’s imagine music background for the classic romantic love story with trees, golden fields, mysterious forests and wild streams and of course an old-fashioned couple in their sophisticated clothes, holding each other’s hands, walking round a small mansion surrounded by a colorful garden. What can it be? Definitely Chopin! That sentimental piano, always touching, always full of emotions.

Now let us take you to Chopin’s world. Our tour is not a history lesson, it is not about sitting and listening to music. It is a true journey in time, for which you need someone special as a guide or rather a tutor, who helps you understand where the Chopin’s genius came from.

Warsaw Chopin Tour

We meet you in Warsaw and it is where our story begins. Chopin Museum, located in an old, small castle on a hill, is just a few steps from the main city center. Our guides have been trained to show it to you exactly the way the founders (musicians, professors, composers) wanted it to be shown, for it is not a typical museum. They made it fully interactive, as their aim is to let you understand the complicated classical music theory as well as the complicated biography of Chopin.
We follow then Frederick’s footsteps in Warsaw. The amazingly restored Royal Route looks almost identical to the 19th century photos and drawings you’ve seen in the museum. Chopin’s family apartments in three different locations, University of Music, his favorite cafes, parks where he dated his first girlfriends – now that you know the story, it is all within a walking distance. And before we leave the city, let’s do a sound check and test acoustics in one of the churches where Chopin first performed.

After lunch, it is about time to have a smooth drive to the city outskirts. Look for an inspiration (Chopin’s or your own) and admire the rural landscape of Mazovia district. We get to Żelazowa Wola – Frederick’s birthplace. Here, in a beautiful, tiny mansion his parents met and his mother gave birth to him in 1810. Even after they had moved to Warsaw, the Chopin family used to come back to the countryside very often and it is frequently described as a key to understand Chopin’s style – romanticism. Walk there, breathe the fresh air, sit under the weeping willow and you won’t disagree.

Dom Fryderyka Chopin w żelazowej Woli

As a conclusion you visit two sacred places. First, the parish church in Brochow, where Chopin’s parents got married and Frederick was baptized. What’s unique about it – the church was used as a fortress from the middle ages to World War II. Its huge brick construction and strong fence look somewhat peculiar dominating the little village for which it serves nowadays. Back to Warsaw, finally you have a moment for your own imagination. Chopin’s life and opus was unfinished. Now, just look at the plaque on one of the columns inside the Holly Cross Church. There is a small urn behind. Urn with the young composer’s heart. It was his last will to bring it back to his hometown, as he died in Paris at the age of thirty-nine.
